Facebook contacts.

John Burt
An interesting article showing how to get a list of all the data Facebook has from you. I tried it and even though I have never authorized their access to my contacts, they have them. I looked at the FB settings and could not see any way to turn off or prevent them accessing the contacts.

At least on iOS, Settings / Privacy / Contacts, and make sure that Facebook is off.

If you go into Facebook on a computer browser, there is a link on the left “Find friends”. Click that, and then in the upper right there is “Add Personal Contacts.”  Click the link “Manage Imported Contacts” (I have none myself) and you can manage what’s there (including "contacts you’ve uploaded in Messenger”). I believe that this is the location to remote any uploaded contacts.

On my iOS 11 phone, there are no Facebook apps even listed under Settings > Privacy > Contacts. My listed apps are (Cisco) Jabber, Google Voice, Gmail, Google+, Google Maps, Skype, Lyft; all disabled except Jabber, which is used for work.

I don't see any iOS settings within the Facebook app, if I tap the bottom right hamburger menu, scroll down to Settings, they're all server-side settings unrelated to the phone. In iOS Settings > Facebook, there's nothing about Contacts.

In Messenger, Facebook's separate messaging app, you can click your face in the top left corner to access your "Me" settings and look under People for the Sync Contacts toggle. I never use Messenger and when I opened it, the people icon at the bottom has a notification label for Find Phone Contacts; it was trying to get me to enable contact syncing, "Messenger will continuously upload your contact to connect you with friends."

Note this is different than what Messenger (and Facebook Lite) have done on Android. On that platform, the permitted apps upload not only the contacts but also call and text history (timestamps of all your calls and texts, probably also call duration).

Unlike the call and text history collection on Android, I don't think disabling Sync Contacts in any given app will make Facebook delete all the information they've already collected.

Ok, but my previous message was two paragraphs. The first (which you quoted) was how to stop giving Facebook access to your contacts from an iOS device, the second was how to remove the uploaded contacts that you may have uploaded at some point in the past (I have always and definitively said no to that to Facebook so, like I said in my last message, I have no uploaded contacts.)

Of course Facebook had contact information from the people you have definitively friended, but this would remove contact information for those people you are not friends with.

Re: Facebook contacts.

Wow- what a mess, especially the iOS apps. But then we knew that FB was a mess already. Best thing might be to just delete the iOS apps.

Interesting info though. I did manage to follow the instructions. Most of them were already off but they did lead to more stuff to turn off and delete.

Thanks
