Lost Messages

Jeremy Roussak
The disk in my iMac failed and I had a new one installed. Although I have restored from a very recent Time Machine backup, all message threads in Messages have disappeared. They are still present on my iPhone and on my MacBook Pro.

Can I get them back on the iMac?

TIA

Jeremy

Try rebuilding the mailboxes. It’s in one of the menus.

Apple is supposed to be working on Messages in iCloud, which will sync messages between devices. So, if you have the same history on the iPhone and the MBP, when this starts to happen, they should be able to sync over to the new system, in case what I link in the next paragraph doesn’t work. Apple had Message in iCloud in the iOS 11.3 and macOS 10.13.4 betas, but it was removed in the stable release. (It’s back in the iOS 11.4 beta 1). In fact, I did just this to set up a new iPhone as new a few weeks ago and get al of the message history over: I installed the beta on my old phone, set up Message sync, installed the beta on the new iPhone, set up Message sync - and there they all were.

The only answer I could find that seemed to work for somebody without the beta is here: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/125242/backing-up-restoring-messages-history-on-mavericks

Thanks, Doug. I’ve tried it, but sadly it hasn’t worked. Messages for High Sierra must store things somewhere else. Hey ho.

Re: Lost Messages

Gert-Jan de Waard
In MacOS High Siera Messages are stored in ~/Library/Messages/
Use Go to folder in the Finder to get there.

There are 3 chat-databases and a cloudkit folder (on my system).

Perhaps you can copy those databases (and the folder if not empty) from your MBP to your iMac.

NB: All usual precautions against data-loss apply.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Gert-Jan de Waard

Re: Lost Messages

Jeremy Roussak
Amazing - I removed ~/Library/Messages folder completely, then restarted Messages and all my old history reappeared. No restoring from backup needed.

Curiously, although ~/Library/Messages was recreated as soon as I launched Messages again, it’s empty.

Thanks, Gert-Jan.
