Move from Evernote to what?

Stewart Leicester
Evernote just sent me an email containing this:

<<In 30 days, you will be able to sync your notes to a maximum of 2
devices using Evernote Basic. Upgrading your subscription will allow you
to use an unlimited number of devices>>

Since I use it on a Mac Pro, a MacBook Pro, my work MBP, my iPhone and
my iPad, the 2 device limit is not going to work very well for me :-)

Any suggestions of what to move to and converting? I've only ever saved
web page images and text.

Thanks!

Stewart

I use Jottings for Dropbox but I'm pretty sure it only does text and is not as sophisticated. Each note is saved as a text file in a folder on Dropbox making it accessible to any machine that can access Dropbox and to any plain text editor.

How about Apple’s Notes?  It can easily handle text and images, has an attachment viewer for seeing all your images at once, and syncing is fast and reliable.

Notes lost all my iOS data several times so I abandoned it. My wife had the same problem and switched to an encrypted Notes program. I don't know which one. Syncing was not the cause since my wife does not sync.

BTW, the Jottings notes are backed up during every type of backup of my Mac.

I moved from Evernote to Microsoft OneNote more that a year ago and I couldn't have done a better choice.
It works with Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Windows, Android, and a web browser.
It is free, and really well engineered, powerful, and with an intuitive interface (type, write and draw in free form; add on the fly camera pictures). It never fails a sync (unlike my experience in Evernote while having multiple devices). It has a web clipper and a useful email2onenote service.

I concur. I also moved from Evernote to OneNote a while back and never looked back.

I had a partial loss of data on Notes and failure to sync several times, so finally moved all the important stuff to EverNote some time ago.

I’d been using EverNote Basic for well over a year and upgraded to the middle of the line paid grade. It's worth noting that I’m on Social Security and any other income is undependable. I just figured that as much as I use EverNote, and as much it’s done in return for me, it was worth it.

Note that Apple moved from the occasionally-troublesome IMAP based storage of notes, to dedicated iCloud storage in iOS 9 / OS X 10.11, and it’s subsequently been a lot more reliable.

(Assuming you’ve chosen the option to upgrade your notes.)

Re: Move from Evernote to what?

After I swore I would never use a Microsoft product a while back, I immediately made an exception as soon as I found OneNote.

I like OneNote’s interface much better than Evernote’s. Evernote’s interface looks so ancient and outdated to me. Another thing I like about Evernote is being able to add drawings on my iPad.

But OneNote for Mac is not perfect. It seems the Windows version has a lot more features than the Mac version (although I have no idea what it lacks since I’ve never worked on a PC). But you can’t beat the price. It’s free !

My needs are rather simple. Store notes, documents and other attachments; and have them sync reliably between my iMac and two iOS devices. For me, Notes does this beautifully. I can create groups and only view the groups I need at the time. I had been using Evernote but they have been imposing more and more restrictions on the “free” accounts. So with the revisions brought by Apple in iOS 9 I switched over and have been pleased with the results.

I made a quick look at OneNote and just didn’t like the design of the app. It felt awkward and non-intuitive. Perhaps if I had a good resource to walk me through the interface the first time it would have been more useful. But I didn’t want to invest the time in learning a new paradigm, so I took the easy road and stuck with Notes.

Re: Move from Evernote to what?

I used to use DEVONthink Pro (still have it installed and updated) but switched to EverNote about 4 years ago (give or take). Now I am seriously considering going back to DT and getting the Office version with the Summerfest sale going on. I thought having my data in the cloud would be useful but I so rarely access it. And DT has an app of sorts that can give me what access I likely need on those rare occasions. I just need to really deep think it first. 4 years of data is a pretty massive migration project.

I agree that OneNote is a bit wonky in places, and doesn’t follow some Mac conventions (e.g., drag-selecting of text doesn’t work), but Evernote is equally wonky, just in different ways. At least Microsoft doesn’t regularly harangue you to upgrade to a paid version. I switched because I got fed up with the upgrade spam.

Maybe we mean something different, but what I think of as drag-selecting
(click and hold, move the mouse, text between the initial click and the
current position is selected in real-time as you move the mouse) works
fine for me in OneNote.

> but Evernote is equally wonky, just in different ways.

I found Evernote worse, the one that drove me batty was shift-click to
select a range sometimes didn't work, it would treat it as a regular
click. Other times it did, so I know it supports it, it just didn't
always work.

But yes, OneNote has some oddities too, I just find them less annoying
than Evernote's.

>   At least Microsoft doesn’t regularly harangue you to upgrade to a paid version. I switched because I got fed up with the upgrade spam.

That wasn't my sole reason for switching, but it was definitely on the
list. But even if I hadn't switched the change to just two devices for
the free version would have done it, I have five devices I regularly use.

Ah, there should have been a “double-click” on the front of that, i.e., double-click to select a word, then drag to select by word. Similar for triple-click and drag (select by line).

It’s very sad to see Yojimbo not fare so well in the vote-getting, because it’s a high-quality, industrial strength application. However, there's a very good reason for this lack of love: there’s no solution for capturing on iOS devices and syncing to the desktop (iOS just celebrated its 9th birthday). Yes, there’s an iPad app, but you can’t capture jack with it, only perform a (very unwieldy) sync from your macOS device.

I still use Yojimbo and pay for their macOS to macOS sync service, but the lack of iOS capture is a sad state of affairs and a huge unforced error.

Ah, got it. You're right, it doesn't do either of those (double- or
triple-click and drag). I hardly ever do those so hadn't noticed that
OneNote doesn't handle them, but I can understand that if you use either
of those a lot it would be a deal breaker not to be able to use them.
