Plex with Apple TV

Rodney
I’m trying to use the Plex client to connect to two different Plex servers, one local and one remote, but an afternoon of Googling hasn’t shown me the way.

The Plex app is now on Apple TV, and I’m very unhappy with iTunes, so I decided to try running a Plex server on my iMac and moving all my video content to it except stuff I bought from the iTunes Store. Downloading and installing the Plex server went fine, but I’m having a problem with the Apple TV client.

I’d previously installed the Plex client on my Apple TV so I could access a friend’s server remotely. It worked great. However, when I installed my local server I saw my friend’s server as before in the Apple TV client, and I saw my new server as well, but my iMac server showed as “Not authorized”, and I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to authorize it.

I signed out of my friend’s server, and my Apple TV client immediately presented me with a 4 digit code and told me to access a web site. I did so, entered the code, and my client immediately connected to my local server, but my friend’s server vanished, and I can’t find a way to add it back.

I’m not interested in merging the content of the two servers, although I discovered that this feature has been heavily requested for a couple of years. I’d just like to easily switch between the two without having to log out of one and enter an authentication code. Is there an easy way to do this?

Re: Plex with Apple TV

Kim Gammelgaard
Hi

I am running both iTunes and Plex on my AppleTV connected to my iMac too.

This is not answering your question, but I wanted to highlight that I didn’t move any content from iTunes, I just pointed the server to the file system of iTunes and Plex picked it up.

That way I have the search and filtering options in both the iTunes-client and the Plex client, of which the latter is indeed much better. The iTunes versions have all become worse over the years, both on the computer and on the AppleTV. For one, I really enjoy that the suggestions from Plex are what is in my Library and not what I have to pay for…

Best regards

Kim

I’m aware of that, but I specifically don't want to do it. I mostly get video content from the iTunes Store these days, but I have a lot of my own stuff that I bought on DVD or Blu-ray over the years. I don’t want a local backup of stuff in the iTunes Store because I can re-download it if necessary, but I do want to back up the stuff I added. That is a major hassle when everything is mixed together in iTunes, but trivial if the two libraries are separate.

Setup an account at Plex.tv and then get your friend to add you as a user on their server, I have accounts on several servers although they are mostly for watching when visiting the friends.

As I said, I was already set up on my friend’s server, but my own local server showed as “Unauthorized”. I disconnected from my friend’s server, I was able to then connect to mine, but now I can’t find any way to connect to my friend’s again.

Has he re-invited you via Plex.tv ?

No, but I still have the original login credentials he sent me.

He shouldn't have sent you login credentials. He should have invited you. He could have invited you by specifying your Plex username (if you had one) or your email address, as per:

If you are using credentials he gave you, he either set up a Plex account for you (which is not something I ever do for people) or you are perhaps using his account. You can sign into (or create) a Plex account here:

Thank you VERY much. My friend only recently installed Plex, and I’ve come to the conclusion that he doesn’t know how it is supposed to work, and neither do I. I’d just been accessing his server from a web browser just to see how it worked. I then installed the Apple TV app.

I do have a Plex account now. I created it when I installed my own server today. I’ll follow the links you sent, and explain to my friend how to do it right.

Thanks. That was exactly what I, and my friend, needed. We’re both new to Plex.
