Apple Reveals Spring 2018 Collection of Apple Watch Bands

By Adam C. Engst
http://tidbits.com/article/17860

Apple has announced a new collection of Apple Watch bands, which will be available later this month. On the slate are new sport bands ($49), woven nylon bands ($49), sport loops ($49), and classic buckles ($149) in spring colors. Apple has also created new bundles, including the space gray aluminum Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) with the Black Sport Loop and the space gray aluminum Apple Watch Nike+ (GPS + Cellular) with the Midnight Fog Nike Sport Loop. The Nike Sport Loop band ($49), which will now be sold separately, will come in new colors, and the Hermès Single Tour Rallye ($439) and Double Tour ($489) bands now display contrasting paint details.

I'm glad Apple's spending their time on something important and not wasting resources on unnecessary things like QA or UX or security...

Bravo! Still, people will tire of their Apple Wristband collections when they see the new 2018 lineup of Tonka toys and action figures.

Sorry, but this is a very silly thing to say as it implies the absurd notion that the people designing new bands are engineers and/or programmers.

Me too. But maybe if they took the money they're paying the fashion design people and used it instead to hire some more security people?

I didn't say people, I said resources. Presumably the people designing
the bands are being paid, no? And that pay could go to someone else
instead? Maybe... security or QA engineers?

Still an extremely silly thing to say. Apple has more than enough in the bank to hire both; the problem is that security and QA engineers aren’t something you can just buy off the shelf, like a six-pack of Pepsi at the local QuickMart. The really good people are rare. The really good people, at least in my experience, also have enough loyalty that you can’t just hire them away by waving money in their face. Just throwing money at the problem doesn’t work.

Apple's revenue from services and non hardware sales are growing rapidly. They have a 50% market share:

Apple Reveals Storming Apple Watch Success In Best-Ever Quarter

Watch sales heavily skew seasonal; bands are a great source of revenue year round. And it doesn't hurt to have Apple branded products on display at stores ranging from Hermes to Target. And since AW is more than just a fitness watch, a sizable % of the market could want a lower cost band to get sweaty as well as a fancy schmancy one.

The markups on watch bands are huge. The basic AW plastic band probably costs less than $5 to make, the expensive ones are even more profitable. The fancy schmancy bands are a lot more profitable, and the licensed brands rake in a lot more without incurring production or distribution costs.

If Apple products were not beautifully designed, highly functional, unique and category definers, the company would have died in the John Scully era.

Security is a part of this formula, and It is an important one. But lots of insecure devices, as well as services, outsell Apple products by far.

Exactly. Almost al the bands mentioned in the article are new products created by existing licensees - Nike and Hermes. I think it's safe to assume Apple's existing legal, design and licensing people handled this without an a big outlay of extra cash, if there was any at all.

"Apple has announced a new collection of Apple Watch bands, which will be available later this month. On the slate are new sport bands ($49), woven nylon bands ($49), sport loops ($49), and classic buckles ($149) in spring colors."

This is nothing resembling a redesign, overhaul, or new line introduction. If everyone on the design team was totally overwhelmed and under water, they could have assigned a few underpaid interns to do the initial legwork on the spring colors. It would look fabulous on their resumes, and practically guarantee them an outrageous, high paying job upon graduation.

"Apple has also created new bundles, including the space gray aluminum Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) with the Black Sport Loop and the space gray aluminum Apple Watch Nike+ (GPS + Cellular) with the Midnight Fog Nike Sport Loop.'

These are just new bundles of existing products. No biggie.

Marilyn

FWIW, the woven nylon band on my Apple Watch is looking a little ratty, and I've been holding off replacing it with something newer until the "spring bands" were released. I'm glad that Apple is wasting money on these things.

(No offense to anyone, but the thought that a company with approx $300 billion in cash reserves, growing by hundreds of millions of dollars every day, can't spend money on both redesigning accessory watch bands, iPhone cases, etc., and also somehow solving engineering issues at the same time is a little funny.)

Sure, that makes sense. Apple is certainly cash-starved and can't afford to hire more X unless they cut some of the budget for Y.

Please.
