Transfer data options old machine

Norm Harris
Trying to help someone who has the following:

What is best way to transfer data from Mac Pro (5years old) with ethernet, FW 800 and USB 2.0 to a new MBP with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt?

Old computer has two (2) 1TB drives in old Mac Pro and trying to move to new MacBook Pro and excess to new external 4TB drive.

And how long will it take to transfer the 2TB of data.

Thanks for any info.

How about something like (but there others):

http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-5-0Gbps-Docking-Station-ST0019U/dp/B003ZUXXVU/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt/185-2168565-6525143

Remove drives from MacPro, insert in the docking station and attach using USB3 (someone will be along in a moment and tell us that there's one offering Thunderbolt). Then use Migration Assistant.

What's your definition of "best"? Fastest? Easiest?

I can think of several methods:

1) Simple but slow: ethernet network between the two machines.

2) Simple but also slow: connect the new 4TB external to the old machine (it'll run at slower USB2 speeds). Depending on what you're wanting to transfer, you might clone the original computer's drives and then connect the new drive to the new Mac and use Migration Assistant to move the user account and OS settings over).

3) Faster but requires extra equipment: you can buy a Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adapter for $30. In *theory* you could boot the old Mac in Target Disk mode and mount it onto the new Mac and transfer everything over (at Firewire speeds). I say theory because I haven't tried it and using an adapter might muck things up, though I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Thunderbolt to Firewoie adapter and put the Pro in FW target disk mode. Should take a couple of hours.
