.drv video

Sharp James M.
Greetings.

I need to view a video on my Air that has the designation .drv.  A double click won’t open it.  Suggestions are welcomed, with thanks.

Happy Labor Day weekend.

For video the answer is normally VLC.

Google’s super handy, you should try it!

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=drv+video+file

:-)

Apparently, there are proprietary video surveillance systems that use this
“format”, but it may be possible to just change the extension to .avi and
it’ll open in QuickTime or VLC.

In many cases, but not all, the Unix file command (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_(command) ) can identify files,
regardless of how they’re named, by inspecting “magic numbers” (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_(programming) ) — that is, it
scans the beginning of the file, generates a fingerprint for the file, then
looks up the file from a list of known formats. So personally, if VLC
didn’t work, I’d drag the file icon to a Terminal window to run `file` on
it & see what it says, then go from there.

If that doesn’t help, again, Google’s just a click away. The trick is to
figure out what codec the video is in (MPEG, h.264, etc), and what video
wrapper format they’re using (AVI, QuickTime, Windows Media WMV, etc). It’s
possible, but a little unlikely, that they’re truly using something
proprietary; more likely, it’s a standard format with a different file
extension.

Someone asked a similar question a few years ago and Handbrake seemed to be the answer.
