It’s been my go-to site for years. In fact, I check it several times a day. It’s a good place to keep track of new apps and updates to existing apps.

I was a free subscriber for years and started a paid subscription a couple of years ago.

I mostly used it to be notified of new updates and then went to the developers site to download them. Ever since self-updating apps became the norm, I use that option whenever available. For all other updates I allow the MacUpdate Desktop to do the work for me, when possible.

MacUpdate did have a period when they were packaging adware into installers for users that were not subscribed, but I understand they finally stopped doing that after tons of complaints.

Nice site.  I view it via an RSS subscription every day.

Been using MacUpdate for almost two decades now.  It’s my go-to site to peruse when I need an app for something.  It’s a far superior experience than Apple’s App Store.  And there are just so many apps that will never be listed in the App Store…

fwiw,
- Dan.

I have used for a few years, it works OK, although from time to time wants to peddle some extra “apps” on you. is commercial after all.

Re: macUpdate survey

I stopped using or recommending these types of web sites years ago when they started modifying the original software deployments. I just say no and go to the source.

I use MacUpdate, but instead of launching the application, they send me emails when there are updates, and I go to their website and download the updaters. For a while, they started wrapping the updaters in some of their own installer code that tried to get you to install random toolbars and other crap, but I’ve noticed they’ pretty much stopped doing that in the last few months. Maybe they got some pushback. The main reason I like them is that many of the updates it tells me about I would never have discovered myself. Others, like VueScan, it’s easier than using the apps built-in update functionality because you have to re-enter your serial number each time there’s an update, but if you download it from MacUpdate and drag to replace, it automatically recognizes you have a license. So it’s more convenient.

For a while Macupdate was wrapping the software update in a package that would also install other software. I have been going to the main links because of this, but was told recently on the Tidbits list that they are no longer doing that and only download the linked software. I can't remember which software they were including, but it was not malicious and to help their bottom line. Turns out if you include any extra software, it becomes obnoxious.

I think they have stopped this, can anyone verify?

I’ve used MacUpdate for several years, but never had this experience. As far as I know, they’re not doing it now. If you want to play it safe, they always give you the option to download directly from the developer’s site.

Yes, it has finally been stopped.

The installers used to contain some mild adware if you were not logged in when you downloaded from the site. It was never included when using the desktop app and if you carefully read through what the installer told you, I believe there was a way to opt-out.

many of the download sites started injecting adware, toolbars, and other scamware bordering on malware (or possibly outright malware in some cases) into the downloads. They also try to trick people into downloading their “client” which is nothing more than an ad injection trojan.

Stay away. Download only from legitimate first party sites, and even then be careful )see Transmission which has had *two* massive malware infections into its signed download package).

While @lbutlr and I disagree at times here the only thing I disagree with in his statement is maybe, just maybe his tone. His advice is the same as mine.

My feeling is once you try and INFECT (That's what it is. Period.) my computer by misleading me you're banned from my systems for life.
