snazzy new TidBITS site is live

Mr. Seth Anderson

My 2.3¢ - the new site looks great and is much easier to read and navigate. It took my new password about an hour to arrive (who knows why, could be my ISP), but it did finally make its way to me.

Kudos to your team, and here’s to another 28 years of existence!

I agree.

I received me change password email immediately.

Ironically, the new issue was in my Junk folder. I'm not sure whether Gmail put it there or Mail.app, maybe Mail.app didn't like the new From address or new sending server.

I don't know what actually uses the List-Unsubscribe header, is having a 675 character https URL as the Subject line going to work?

Thanks for the kind words, Seth! The email delivery has been tougher than we thought, but SendGrid has great reporting that has often shown the ISPs to be the problem. Not that that solves the problem, but at least it’s not an unknown.

I’ve gotten a few reports of this — spam filters are loose cannons. But anything people can do to train them not to mark TidBITS as spam or whitelist us will help.

I don't know what actually uses the List-Unsubscribe header, is having a 675 character https URL as the Subject line going to work?

Wow, that is freaky! I wonder if it’s something related to the large mail hosts — Gmail will offer to unsubscribe when people mark legit mail as spam.

I really like the new site and the new email. I've not tried buying anything from the new site yet, but assume it will be a great process as well. You've done a great job.

Thanks,

The header, which begins like this:

List-Unsubscribe: <[hidden email] … .ct.sendgrid.net …

sure looks like something included by Sendgrid (I've redacted the unique bits). I don't think an intermediary like Google would invent the email address and while the URL in the subject line is very similar to the one on the "Unsubscribe from all email" link at the bottom of the message, they're not identical.

I’ve gotten a number of reports of this, but haven’t been able to track it down.

Every time you request a new password, the previous link is invalidated. So you have to be sure to work from the latest reset email message. (Or at least I believe that’s true, anyway!)

Others are having trouble getting the password reset email messages. Some of those are just delay problems, and it does show up eventually. Others aren’t being delivered because the ISPs are marking them as spam — I can see that in SendGrid. There’s nothing I can do about that, alas.

Issues with the site: Using a Windows 10 machine with Edge browser, does not recognize me as a registered user, refuses my credentials (username / pw), and won’t allow either a new pw or to register anew.

On balance what I can see looks good.

Thanks.

I just checked my Windows 10 machine. I logged on to tidbits.com successfully using the credentials I had previously stored in 1Password on my Mac. So it either is an account issue or some other malign magic.

Some of the problem we’re having is that our $20 per month for 100,000 messages account at SendGrid uses a shared pool of IP addresses, and other senders with lower reputations have gotten some of those IPs on RBLs. We could upgrade to the $80 per month for 100,000 messages account and get a dedicated IP address, which might be a good idea, though I sort of hate to pay more just for that reason.

That is typical, but in my case, I received 2 "reset password” emails within a moment of each other (though there was about 20 minutes between my requests). I first clicked the email that arrived second, but got the same error others have mentioned. I clicked it again to make sure with the same result. Then opened the email that I received first, and that link worked correctly. Looking back today, the emails both are have a time stamp of 8:21 PM CST so maybe they arrived in reverse order from when they were actually sent from Sendgrid/tidbits to my ISP.

Re: snazzy new TidBITS site is live

Nigel Stanger-2
This is a little odd: some of the TidBITS Talk emails are arriving at my end with a To address of
[hidden email] (e.g., Seth’s message about password reset messages in this thread), while others are arriving with a To address of [hidden email] (e.g., Adam’s response to Seth two minutes later). The former are being caught by an Exchange rule and filtered into the TidBITS folder, while the latter aren’t.

I just changed the rule to filter on “To contains tidbits.com” rather than the specific email address, which should hopefully fix things at my end.

> IPv6 is especially irritating since spamhaus and probably others add an entire /64 IP block if even one IP in the quadrillion or so is bad, because many hosts are handing out /64s.

Linode is part of this problem, they do not hand out /64's, but use a single /64 for an entire location. snf then assigns each machine a single fixed IPv6 address. This has caused no end of problems for people.

And yes, this means that you are probably hosed forever.

Blocking a /64 is the proper thing to do, since that should describe an individual user's network, and no one should be doing what Linode is doing. Linode should assign each customer a /64 and that /64 should never change. They are still thinking in IPv4 terms and needlessly creating "static IPv6" and "Dynamic IPv6" classes.

However, you can request an additional "static" IPv6 address at Linoed. I do not know if they charge, but you can get a /116 which covers 4K addresses.
